Source: Shodhganga: The Kavyavilasa of Ciranjiva Bhattacarya (kavyashastra)

Prauḍokti (प्रौडोक्ति) refers to one of the 93 alaṃkāras (“figures of speech”) mentioned by Cirañjīva Bhaṭṭācārya (fl. 17th century) in his Kāvyavilāsa and is listed as one of the 89 arthālaṃkāras (figure of speech determined by the sense, as opposed to sound).—When one thing is described to have power to do something, though it actually do not possess the power it is known as the figure prauḍokti.

Cirañjīva defines prauḍokti as follows—“prauḍoktistadaśaktasya tacchaktatvāvakalpanam”.—Cirañjīva’s definition is verbatim with Jayadeva’s definition of prauḍokti (C.L.V/47). This figure of speech is not found to be treated by famous Ālaṃkārikas like Bhāmaha, Mammaṭa, Viśvanātha, Ruyyaka etc. Perhaps Jayadeva is the first to introduce it and Cirañjīva is his follower.

Example of the prauḍokti-alaṃkāra:—

diśo daṇḍānūrdhvaṃ yugapadadhiruhya pracalitā sametya brahmāṇḍaṃ prasaritavatī siṃhanṛpateḥ |
dalattārāpuṣpasphuradamṛtadhāmaikaphalinī jagatpūrtyai kīrtiḥ kalayati latāmūrtimabhitaḥ ||

“The achievements of the king Siṃha (i.e. Yaśavanta) has gone to take the form of a creeper in front for welfare of the earth, it has proceeded upwards simultaneously after ascending the sticks in the forms of quarters and extended after getting upon the earth and it puts down the shining flower which blooms only in the heaven in the form of stars”.

Notes: In this verse the achievements or deeds of the king Yaśavanta have been described to take the form of a creeper though it has not the power to assume a concrete form. So this is an example of prauḍokti.
