Pratiyogin (प्रतियोगिन्).—a.

1) Opposing, counteracting, impeding.

2) Related or corresponding to, being or forming a counter-part of (anything); often used in works on Nyāya; as a घट (ghaṭa) is the प्रतियोगी (pratiyogī) of घटाभाव (ghaṭābhāva); (yasyābhāvo vivakṣyate sa pratiyogī).

3) Co-operating with.

4) Equally matched. -m.

1) An adversary, opponent, enemy; आर्थो विरोधः शक्तेन जातो नः प्रतियोगिना (ārtho virodhaḥ śaktena jāto naḥ pratiyoginā) Mv.2.7; दहत्यशेषं प्रतियोगि- गर्वम् (dahatyaśeṣaṃ pratiyogi- garvam) Vikr.1.117.

Pratiyogin (प्रतियोगिन्).—i. e. prati -yuj + in, and pratiyoga + in, I. adj., f. . 1. Who or what impedes. 2. Connected. Ii. m. 1. An opponent. 2. A counterpart. 3. Any thing or object depending upon another and not existing without it. 4. The counter-entity of a negation, i. e. that thing of which there is a negation. (Cf. a-, adj., Bhāṣāp. 68; the meaning is, that in a true vyāpti the middle term is always found with the major, and this latter cannot be incapable of being found where the middle term is, i. e. in the minor term.)
