Source: archive.org: Shiva Purana - English TranslationPrativākya (प्रतिवाक्य) refers to “speaking in return”, according to the Śivapurāṇa 2.5.2 (“The Prayer of the gods).—Accordingly, after the Gods spoke to Śiva: “On hearing these words of Indra and other heaven-dwellers who were expatiating on their distress, Śiva spoke in return (prativākya) [śivaḥ saṃbhāṣamāṇānāṃ prativākyamuvāca saḥ]”.
The Purana (पुराण, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
