Source: Shodhganga: a concise history of Sanskrit Chanda literaturePrastāraśekhara (प्रस्तारशेखर) is the name of a work ascribed to Śrīnivāsa (son of Lakṣmī and Veṅkaṭeśa) related to the topics of Sanskrit prosody (chandas) but having an unknown period of composition.
The Prastāraśekhara specially deals with the science of Prosody explaining its development by the way of calculation of mātrās and varṇas by permutation and combination. The text is divided in to six chapters. The first chapter describes the prastāra of letters (varṇaprastāra), second describes prastāra of the syllables (mātrāprastāra), third chapter elaborates the prastāra of unequal anuṣṭup (viṣamānuṣṭupprastāra), fourth discusses prastāra of āryā metres (āryāprastāṛa), fifth describes the prastāra of the words (śabdaprastāra), and the sixth discusses the prastāra of vowels (svaraprastāra)866. He also discusses the other varieties of calculations such as: naṣṭa, uddiṣṭa etc.
Chandas (छन्दस्) refers to Sanskrit prosody and represents one of the six Vedangas (auxiliary disciplines belonging to the study of the Vedas). The science of prosody (chandas-shastra) focusses on the study of the poetic meters such as the commonly known twenty-six metres mentioned by Pingalas.
