Prapañcayati (प्रपञ्चयति).—(denom. from prapañca; Pali papañ-ceti), falsely fancies, imagines: Mūla-madhyamaka-kārikā 448.3, 8 (see prapañca); vikalpo prapañcayaṃ(s), pres. pple., Bodhisattvabhūmi 51.7 (see 51.3-5 s.v. prapañca); sa eṣa prapañcyate (pass.) kalpe (kalpo?) niḥprapañcās tathāgatā(ḥ) (Ārya-)Mañjuśrīmūlakalpa 164.9. In Mahāvastu ii.221.2 na khu me prapañcayitavyaṃ, Senart's em., assumed to mean I must not delay; this meaning of this verb is said to occur in Pali; but the Mahāvastu mss. read pra- padyetavyaṃ; curiously, [Pali Text Society’s Pali-English Dictionary] proposes to derive papañceti from papajjate = prapadyate, but this is impossible on both formal and semantic grounds. I have no very good suggestion for the Mahāvastu passage; perhaps I must certainly not rely on, be a burden to (my blind old parents).

context information

Sanskrit, also spelled संस्कृतम् (saṃskṛtam), is an ancient language of India commonly seen as the grandmother of the Indo-European language family (even English!). Closely allied with Prakrit and Pali, Sanskrit is more exhaustive in both grammar and terms and has the most extensive collection of literature in the world, greatly surpassing its sister-languages Greek and Latin.
