婆私吒 [po si zha]—Vasiṣṭha, a brahman who is said to have denied the eternity of nirvana, and maintained that plants had lives and intelligence; Nirvana Sutra 39. One of the seven ancient ṛṣis of Brahmanic mythology, one of the champions in the Ṛg Veda of the priesthood. Name of a brahman whose mother lost her six sons, she became mad, wandered naked, met the Buddha, was restored and became a disciple. Also 婆吒 [po zha]; 私婆吒 [si po zha]; 婆私瑟搋 [po si se chuai] or 婆私瑟柁 [po si se duo].

婆私吒 [po si zha]—(Vasiṣṭha)—[Proper Noun] Also known as 婆私瑟搋 [po si se chuai] (Vasiṣṭha). A 婆羅門 [po luo men] (Brahmin) by name. This Brahmin's mother lost six sons and became deranged, running naked. Upon seeing the 世尊 [shi zun] (World-Honored One), she regained her sanity and received the 三歸戒 [san gui jie] (Three Refuges) (Zá Āhán Jīng 34, Jīng Lǜ Yì Xiàng 23). 俱舍論 [ju she lun] (Abhidharmakośa-śāstra) Chapter 15 states: "Afflicted and ruined by sorrow, her mind went mad, like Vasiṣṭha's mother, etc." 俱舍光記 [ju she guang ji] (Abhidharmakośa-bhāṣya-ṭīkā) Chapter 15 states: "Bipośā (Vibhāṣā) 126 says: As stated in the Sūtra, the Brahmin woman Vasiṣṭha (婆私瑟搋 [po si se chuai]), having lost six sons, became mentally deranged, running naked. Upon seeing the 世尊 [shi zun] (World-Honored One), she regained her original mind." Sanskrit: Vasiṣṭha. A name for a 梵志 [fan zhi] (Brahmacārin). Abbreviated as 婆吒 [po zha] (Vaṭa). Translated as "最勝 [zui sheng] (Most Excellent)." He was a 邪見外道 [xie jian wai dao] (heretical externalist), who believed in the impermanence of 涅盤 [nie pan] (Nirvana) and held that plants and trees have names. 婆私吒—【人名】又作婆私瑟搋。婆羅門名。此婆羅門之母喪六子而狂亂，露形馳走，見世尊而還本心，受三歸戒（雜阿含經三十四，經律異相二十三）。俱舍論十五曰：「愁毒纏壞。心遂發狂。如婆私等。」俱舍光記十五曰：「婆沙一百二十六曰：如契經說。婆私瑟搋婆羅門女喪六子故。心發狂亂。露形馳走。見世尊已。還得本心。」梵 Vasiṣṭha。
