1) a companion, parasite, one who assists the hero of a drama in great undertakings, e. g. in securing his mistress; Daśakumāracarita 2.2; so पीठमर्दिका (pīṭhamardikā) 'a lady who assists the heroine in securing her lover'; उपस्थिता पीठमर्दिकां पण्डितकौशिकीं पुरस्कृत्य देवी (upasthitā pīṭhamardikāṃ paṇḍitakauśikīṃ puraskṛtya devī) M.1.13/14.
2) a dancing master who instructs courtezans in the art of dancing.
