Source: Wisdom Library: Brihat Samhita by VarahamihiraPītakakusuma (पीतककुसुम) [=Pītakusuma?] refers to “flowers of yellow colour”, according to the Bṛhatsaṃhitā (chapter 8), an encyclopedic Sanskrit work written by Varāhamihira mainly focusing on the science of ancient Indian astronomy astronomy (Jyotiṣa).—Accordingly, “The years of Jupiter (bṛhaspati) take their names from the several Nakṣatras in which he reappears after his conjunction with the Sun; and these names are identical with the names of the lunar months. [...] In the Kārttika year of Jupiter, cart drivers, persons that live by fire and cows will be afflicted with miseries; there will be disease and wars in the land; flowers of blood and of yellow colour [i.e., rakta-pītakakusuma] will thrive. [...]”.
Jyotisha (ज्योतिष, jyotiṣa or jyotish) refers to ‘astronomy’ or “Vedic astrology” and represents the fifth of the six Vedangas (additional sciences to be studied along with the Vedas). Jyotisha concerns itself with the study and prediction of the movements of celestial bodies, in order to calculate the auspicious time for rituals and ceremonies.
