Source: Ancient Buddhist Texts: Geography of Early BuddhismPipphalivana (पिप्फलिवन) is the name of an ancient locality situated in Majjhimadesa (Middle Country) of ancient India, as recorded in the Pāli Buddhist texts (detailing the geography of ancient India as it was known in to Early Buddhism).—The Moriyas of Pipphalivana are included in the list of the republican clans that existed in the time of the Buddha. There is little information about the Moriyas in Buddhist literature. From the Suttanta referred to above we come to know that they got a portion of the relics of the Buddha and erected a stupa over the same. In the Mahāvaṃsa we are told that Candagutta, grandfather of Asoka, belonged to the Moriya clan. The Moriyas are, therefore, the same as the Mauryas.
