毘睇 [pi di]—Vidyā — [Term] Vidyā, translated as "bright mantra" (明咒 [ming zhou]). It is a Dharani (陀羅尼 [tuo luo ni]) of a mantra (真言 [zhen yan]). A Dharani can dispel the afflictions (煩惱 [fan nao]), darkness, and hindrances (闇障 [an zhang]) of sentient beings, hence it is called "bright". Volume 4 of the Biography of Eminent Monks Seeking the Dharma (求法高僧傳四 [qiu fa gao seng chuan si]) states: "Vidyā is translated as 'bright mantra' (明咒 [ming zhou]), and Dhara (陀羅 [tuo luo]) means 'to uphold' (持 [chi])."

毘睇—【術語】Vidyā,譯曰明咒。真言之陀羅尼也。陀羅尼能破眾生之煩惱闇障,故名明。求法高僧傳四曰:「毘睇譯為明咒,陀羅是持。」
