Pharmacognostical studies are good tools for identifying the right candidate from a set of controversial herbs.—The Ashtanga Hridaya (a classical text of Ayurveda) recommends numerous substances of vegetable, animal and mineral origin to be used in the preparation of medicines. Nevertheless, herbs form the major segment. [...] Several synonyms are often ascribed to a single herb. [...] Sometimes same synonym is shared by several herbs. [...] Because of this, the identities of many herbs remain controversial. [...] One way of clearing this confusion is by adopting the concept of pharmaco-linguistics proposed by Krishnamurthy (1971). [...] Another way of solving the problem is analyzing the etymology, synonyms, their clinical application and chronological differences. [...] Pharmacological, phytochemical and pharmacognostical studies are good tools for identifying the right candidate from a set of controversial herbs. In vitro and in vivo studies can confirm whether the controversial plants possess the same biological activities.

Traditional practice of Āyurveda in ancient India dates back to at least the first millenium BC. Literature is commonly written in Sanskrit using various poetic metres.
