Accordingly:—“[...] even after mutilating the chief devas and sages, he never became calm like the king of serpents (phaṇirāj) whose anger had been aroused. After uprooting his enemies, like a lion the elephants of the forest, Vīrabhadra surveyed all the quarters frequently to know ‘who is where’.”.
The Purana (पुराण, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
