Source: archive.org: Shiva Purana - English TranslationPāvitrya (पावित्र्य) refers to “tidiness”, according to the Śivapurāṇa 2.3.44 (“Menā regains consciousness”).—Accordingly, as Menā said to the Sages: “[...] What an awful bridegroom has been secured by this wicked girl? [...] He has no good dress, no ornaments, no assistant? His vehicle is not good. He is neither rich nor even in the prime of youth. He has no tidiness (pāvitrya) about him. He is not learned. What a repulsive body he has! What has he, on seeing which I may be tempted to give my good daughter to him? [...]”.
The Purana (पुराण, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
