Jyotisha (astronomy and astrology)
Source: Wisdom Library: Brihat Samhita by VarahamihiraPauṣṭikakarma (पौष्टिककर्म) or simply Pauṣṭika refers to “ceremonies (to secure special benefits)”, according to the Bṛhatsaṃhitā (chapter 8), an encyclopedic Sanskrit work written by Varāhamihira mainly focusing on the science of ancient Indian astronomy astronomy (Jyotiṣa).—Accordingly, “The years of Jupiter (bṛhaspati) take their names from the several Nakṣatras in which he reappears after his conjunction with the Sun; and these names are identical with the names of the lunar months. [...] In the Pauṣa year of Jupiter, mankind will be happy; princes will cease their enmity to one another; the price of food crops will become cheap doubly or tribly and there will be an increase of ceremonies to secure special benefits [i.e., pauṣṭikakarma-prasiddhi]”.
Note: Such ceremonies are known as Pauṣṭikakarma, the co-relative of this being Śāntikakarma, which aims at the removal of existing evils—the two together go by the name of Naimittika (purposive) Karma, whose co-relative again is Nityakarma i.e. ceremonies, the daily observance of which is enjoined by the Śāstras.
Jyotisha (ज्योतिष, jyotiṣa or jyotish) refers to ‘astronomy’ or “Vedic astrology” and represents the fifth of the six Vedangas (additional sciences to be studied along with the Vedas). Jyotisha concerns itself with the study and prediction of the movements of celestial bodies, in order to calculate the auspicious time for rituals and ceremonies.
