Paścimasamaya (पश्चिमसमय) refers to the “latter age”, according to the Gaganagañjaparipṛcchā: the eighth chapter of the Mahāsaṃnipāta (a collection of Mahāyāna Buddhist Sūtras).—Accordingly, “Then the bodhisatva Gaganagañja addressed himself to the Lord: ‘O Lord, please give the Tathāgata’s blessing over this exposition of the dharma so that, in the latter time, in the latter age (paścimasamaya), it will be disseminated and practiced throughout the Jambūdvīpa’. The Lord said: ‘For that reason, son of good family, I will invoke the Four Great Kings so that they will come and strive to keep this exposition of the dharma for a long time with detailed and analytical explanation’”.

Paścimasamaya (पश्चिमसमय) refers to the “last age”, according to the Vajratuṇḍasamayakalparāja, an ancient Buddhist ritual manual on agriculture from the 5th-century (or earlier), containing various instructions for the Sangha to provide agriculture-related services to laypeople including rain-making, weather control and crop protection.—Accordingly, [after Agastya-Ṛṣi taught the offering manual] “Then Vajrapāṇi, the great leader of the Yakṣas, addressed the Bhagavān thus, ‘May the Bhagavān give his empowerment so that I shall provide protection and safeguard in the last time, in the last age (paścimasamayapaścime samaye)’”.
