Paricāreti, (Caus. of paricarati) 1. to serve, wait on, attend upon, honour, worship (cp. BSk. paricārayati Divy 114 sq. , 421) S. I, 124 (pāde); DhA. III, 196 (id.); J. I, 81 (°cāritabba-ṭṭhāna place of worship); IV, 274; V, 9. ‹-› Pass. paricāriyati, ppr. °iyamāna M. I, 46, 504; J. I, 58. In this sense it may also be taken as “being delighted or entertained by. ” — 2. to amuse oneself, gratify one’s senses, to have recreation, find pleasure (cp. BSk. paricārayati Divy 1, and frequent phrase pañcahi kāmaguṇehi samarpitā samaṅgibhūtā p. e.g. MVastu I. 32) Vin. II, 290; III, 72 (pañcahi kamaguṇehi samappitā etc.); D. I, 36 (id.), 104 (id.); M. Paricāreti (परिचारेति) or Paricārayati.—(= Pali °reti, AMg. pariyārei; Sanskrit °rayate, only BṛhU. 6.1.1 Mādhy., 6.2.1 Kāṇva, and KaṭhaU. 1.25, defined [Boehtlingk and Roth] sich bedienen…, aufwarten lassen, but rather amuses oneself; compare Charpentier IA 57(1928), note 96, on KaṭhaU. 1.25, where it means… with women), (1) amuses oneself: very often preceded by krīḍati ramati (°te), the latter sometimes omitted, as in Mahāvastu ii.97.8; of any kind of amusement, as krīḍanakaiḥ krīḍanti ramanti paricārayanti Saddharmapuṇḍarīka 72.13, and so (not of sexual pleasures) Saddharmapuṇḍarīka 78.2; 80.1; 361.4; Mahāvastu i.194.17 (with liquor; read with mss. paricāretsu, proved by corresp. passage in Pali Dīghanikāya (Pali) ii.172.5 paricāresuṃ); but especially of sexual enjoyment with women, krīḍāhi ramāhi paricārehi Mahāvastu ii.103.6; similarly 443.8, 11; 444.10; 452.10; iii.36.6; 37.14; Divyāvadāna 1.6; 24.14 and often; Avadāna-śataka i.13.8 etc.; Rāṣṭrapālaparipṛcchā 42.7; same trio of verbs but not clearly or exclusively of sexual pleasures Mahāvyutpatti 7349 (compare 7347—8); Suvarṇabhāsottamasūtra 183.2; Lalitavistara 157.7; Mahāvastu i.32.6; 194.17 (mss.); Divyāvadāna 3.25; Sukhāvatīvyūha 42.9; used alone, without krīḍ- and ram-, in the specific sense of has sexual intercourse (with, instr. with sārdhaṃ), Bhavena…tayā sārdhaṃ paricāritaṃ Divyāvadāna 25.28; tāḥ parapuruṣaiḥ sār- dhaṃ paricārayanti 496.5; anayā parapuruṣeṇa sārdhaṃ paricāritaṃ 538.1, and similarly 2; °yati Mūla-Sarvāstivāda-Vinaya ii.36.3; °yāvaḥ, dual, Mūla-Sarvāstivāda-Vinaya i.213.16; (2) attends, waits upon (a person; so simplex paricarati in Sanskrit): tena dāni pratye- kabuddhena ye paricāritā (v.l. °vāritā) pratyekabuddhā(ḥ) Mahāvastu iii.347.18; sarve pi devasaṃghā devīṃ (ii.20.7 Māyāṃ) paricārayitva ākāśe Mahāvastu i.218.8 = ii.20.7 (verse), so Senart in ii.20.7, in i.218.8 he reads °vārayitva (the mss. vary between these two both times); note that according to [Pali Text Society’s Pali-English Dictionary], Pali parivāreti is ‘often erroneously’ used for paricāreti; similarly, paricaritā (so read m.c. for Lefm. paricārita, v.l. °vārita) purime nara ye te sarvasukhenā Lalitavistara 168.13 (verse), those men who formerly were attended (Tibetan rim gro byas, made homage or offerings) by you with every joy; attends (a corpse, said of the funeral procession), pari- cārayitva Lalitavistara 190.16 (verse; no v.l.); ppp. attended, accom- panied (of the mind), guṇagaṇa-paricārita-matī Mahāvastu iii.104.16, his mind attended by flocks of good qualities; frequented, occupied (of a place), nairayikehi sattvehi śūlopetehi tāni parvatāni paricāritāni Mahāvastu i.6.14, these mountains are frequented by hell-inhabitants impaled on stakes (wrongly Senart's note); (3) possibly to be read for paritārayanti Daśabhūmikasūtra.g. 44(70).11 in the meaning they get full knowledge of (compare [Boehtlingk] 4.39 s.v. paritāraṇīya, where it is suggested that paricār° be read, to be sure not in this meaning); this is the regular Sanskrit meaning of pravicārayati, q.v., [Page322-b+ 71] which occurs in this meaning in the preceding line 10, and which in [Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit] is also used in the meaning of paricārayati (1), hence perhaps the latter may have come to be used also in the regular meaning of the former; but I have no parallel case; (4) summons (monks to a meeting): bhikṣūn paricārayitum ārabdhaḥ Mūla-Sarvāstivāda-Vinaya ii.175.9, so ms., ed. em. pracār°; Tibetan bsgrags pa, call.
