咆哮 [páo xiāo] [pao xiao]—
The roar of a wild beast (野獸 [ye shou]). From Chang Jian's (常建 [chang jian]) Tang (唐 [tang]) Dynasty poem (詩 [shi]), "Responding to the Old Man of Kongling Mountain (空靈山應田叟 [kong ling shan ying tian sou])": "At sunset, I hear tigers fighting (虎鬥 [hu dou]), the desolate mountain (空山 [kong shan]) is filled with roars." From Chapter Three (第三回 [di san hui]) of "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" (三國演義 [san guo yan yi]): "Sure enough, that horse (馬 [ma]) was red all over like burning charcoal (火炭般赤 [huo tan ban chi]), without a single strand of mixed hair (無半根雜毛 [wu ban gen za mao]); from head to tail, it was one zhang (丈 [zhang]) long; from hoof to neck, it was eight chi (尺 [chi]) high; neighing, shouting, and roaring (嘶喊 [si han]), it looked as if it could soar into the sky and plunge into the sea (騰空入海 [teng kong ru hai])."
