庖鼎 [páo dǐng] [pao ding]—
Legend has it that in order to persuade King Tang of Shang (商湯 [shang tang]), Yi Yin (伊尹 [yi yin]) personally brought cooking utensils (烹調器 [peng diao qi]) and served as a cook (廚子 [chu zi]) to seek proximity. See "Difficulties in Persuasion" (難言 [nan yan]) in Han Feizi (韓非子 [han fei zi]). Later, this became a metaphor for a worthy minister (賢臣 [xian chen]). In Book of Song (宋書 [song shu]), Volume 7, "Annals of Emperor Qianfei" (前廢帝本紀 [qian fei di ben ji]), it states: "Every time I dream of the kitchen and cauldrons [referring to Yi Yin's governance], I think of rammed earth construction (板築 [ban zhu]) [referring to Fu Yue's origins], toiling diligently until sunset (日昃 [ri ze]), never forgetting the early morning (昧旦 [mei dan])."
