旁坐 [páng zuò] [pang zuo]—
In old times (舊時 [jiu shi]), if one person (一人 [yi ren]) committed a crime (犯罪 [fan zui]), his relatives (親戚 [qin qi]) and friends (朋友 [peng you]) would also be implicated and punished (連帶處罰 [lian dai chu fa]). From "New Book of Tang (新唐書 [xin tang shu]), Volume 132, Biography of Jiang Yi (蔣乂傳 [jiang yi chuan])": "Therefore, the guilt (罪 [zui]) was limited to Qi (錡 [qi]) and his offspring (子息 [zi xi]), with no one else implicated (者 [zhe])." Also written as "collective punishment" (連坐 [lian zuo]).
旁坐：舊時一人犯罪而連帶處罰他的親戚朋友。《新唐書．卷一三二．蔣乂傳》：「故罪止錡及子息，無旁坐者。」也作「連坐」。
