Ayurveda uses five types of evaluative tools, known as the pancha nidana, to diagnose disease. Pancha means “five”, and nidana is “diagnostic methods.” These are

  1. the cause (nidana),
  2. preliminary signs (purva-rupa),
  3. symptoms (rupa),
  4. exploratory methods (upashaya)
  5. and disease development (samprapti).
