pañcamahābhūtēṃ (पंचमहाभूतें).—n pl The five gross or solid elements,--pṛthvī, udaka, tēja, vāyu, ākāśa Earth, water, fire, air, akash. To these are related respectively, as the sūkṣmarūpa or subtil constituent or principle, the pañcasūkṣmabhūtēṃ, viz. gandha, rasa, rūpa, sparśa, śabda Smell, taste, figure, touch (tangibility), sound. These are the archetypes or primordial bases (tanmātrēṃ) of the five gross elements. Hence the phrase pañca- bhūta āṇi pañca tanmātrā, so often occurring in Hindu disquisitions on cosmogony, signifies The five solid or substantial and the five subtil or superelementary principles of all material subsistencies.
