Source: Wisdom Library: Āyurveda and botanyPāṃśuvāpya (हायन) is a Sanskrit word for a species of rice (śāli) which is said to have an inferior quality, according to Caraka in his Carakasaṃhitā sūtrasthāna (chapter 27), a classical Ayurvedic work. The word is composed of pāṃśu (‘crumbling soil’ or ‘dust’) and vāpya (‘scattered’). The plant Pāṃśuvāpya is part of the Śūkadhānyavarga group of medicinal plants, referring to the “group of awned grains”. Caraka defined such groups (vargas) based on the dietic value of the plant.
Āyurveda (आयुर्वेद, ayurveda) is a branch of Indian science dealing with medicine, herbalism, taxology, anatomy, surgery, alchemy and related topics. Traditional practice of Āyurveda in ancient India dates back to at least the first millenium BC. Literature is commonly written in Sanskrit using various poetic metres.
