pāhijē (पाहिजे) [or पाहिजेल, pāhijēla].—(pāhaṇēṃ To see or look. A passive form, yet in constant occurrence in Prakrit poetry. The popular or modern apprehension and usus, although little knowing or heeding this explication, are grounded upon it.) It is necessary, needful, expedient, incumbent; i. e. it should be looked after or seen about. Ex. hā dhōṇḍā malā pā0; hēṃ kāma kēlēṃ pā0; gāṃvāsa gēlā pā0. Used after verbs it throws them into the past tense, or into the form āvayāsa; as hēṃ tuhmāsa lihilēṃ or lihāvayāsa pā0. pāhijēla was a future form implying It will be necessary; but now it differs from pāhijē only in being less common and less elegant. The plural form is pāhijēta; as pannāsa āmbē pāhijēta. The word admits not the distinction of gender. Used after the second person it assumes स; as tū malā pāhijēsa. It often takes up certain forms of the substantive verb asaṇēṃ; as pāhijē hōtā It was necessary or requisite; pāhijē asalā Should it be necessary. pā0 tēvhāṃ At any time; whensoever it is deemed necessary.
