Pagaraṇa (पगरण) is the Prakrit equivalent of the Sanskrit Prakaraṇa—which usually means a “chapter” or a “section” of a work. Alternatively, prakaraṇa means a “small treatise wherein one particular subject is predominantly treated”. Thus the word prakaraṇa is applicable to works written in verse, too, and as a matter of fact, its Pāiya (Prākṛta) equivalent pagaraṇa is used for Siddhasena Divākara’s Sammaipagaraṇa—a versified work.
