It is associated with the festival of certain temples, called padayani or paddenī. Such temples are in Alleppey, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Kottayam districts. The main kolams (huge masks) displayed in padayānī are Bhairavī (Kālī), Kalan (god of death), Yakṣaṇī (fairy) and pakṣī (bird).
