Padāṃśadoṣa (पदांशदोष) refers to “defects occurring in parts of words” and represents one of the various Kāvya-doṣas (‘poetic defects’), as employed in the Bhīṣmacarita (Bhishma Charitra) which is a mahākāvya (‘epic poem’) written by Hari Narayan Dikshit.—Mammaṭa discusses defects occurring in parts of words in Kāvyaprakāśa, VII.52.—It means that excepting (a) lack of correctness, (b) incapability of giving sense and (c) uselessness-these (aforesaid) defects occur in a sentence also; and some of them in parts of words as well.

Three defects are:

  1. discord of letters (pratikūlavarṇa),
  2. the blunted visarga and the rejected visarga (“upahatavisargaṃluptavisargaṃ ca”),
  3. unrhythmical (hatavṛtta).
