Source: INSA Digital Repository: Caraka’s Approach to KnowledgeOveruse (of physical resources) is warned against in Ayurveda, as part of the proposed Bioethics (Cf. Charaka Samhita Sutrasamhita verse 8.18-29).—Charaka’s repeated exhortations that one should learn to see oneself in all living beings and appeal to avoid the overuse and misuse (atiyoga and mithyayoga) of physical resources have a contemporary ring because we hear more and more about ‘sustainable consumption’. The oath which he prescribed for initiates into a physician’s training covered the personal, professional, social and spiritual aspects of the candidate’s life in so lofty a manner that it has few parallels in the history of medicine.
Āyurveda (आयुर्वेद, ayurveda) is a branch of Indian science dealing with medicine, herbalism, taxology, anatomy, surgery, alchemy and related topics. Traditional practice of Āyurveda in ancient India dates back to at least the first millenium BC. Literature is commonly written in Sanskrit using various poetic metres.
