Osvāpana (ओस्वापन).—nt. (presumably for ava-sv°, to ava- svāpayati with -ana; compare apa-sv°), going to sleep; sleeping; or perhaps putting to sleep: Lalitavistara 236.8 (verse; avasvāpanaṃ would be metrically better!) devatābhi osvāpanaṃ kṛtam (in the corresponding prose version 217.7 apasvāpanaṃ); Mahāvastu iii.296.16 (prose) sarvasya rājakulasya °naṃ kṛtam. Non-causative meaning would be possible in both cases, tho causative meaning would seem more natural; but see under apasvāpana; see also osopati, °pana.

context information

Sanskrit, also spelled संस्कृतम् (saṃskṛtam), is an ancient language of India commonly seen as the grandmother of the Indo-European language family (even English!). Closely allied with Prakrit and Pali, Sanskrit is more exhaustive in both grammar and terms and has the most extensive collection of literature in the world, greatly surpassing its sister-languages Greek and Latin.
