Shilpashastra (iconography)
Source: Google Books: The Book of Hindu Imagery: Gods, Manifestations and Their MeaningNrityamurti—this is the position of a god engaged in a dance. The dancer stands on one leg, with a slightly bent knee, while the other leg is supported with the foot against the inside of the thigh of the standing leg. Dance is seen as the ultimate universal act of creation when a god is dancing, and as a form of magic when a person dances. In this case the dancer assumes the personality of the god who is depicted as he is dancing. Examples of dancing gods include: Shiva-Nataraja, Krishna on the snake, Kaliya, and Ganesha as Nritya-Ganapati.
Shilpashastra (शिल्पशास्त्र, śilpaśāstra) represents the ancient Indian science (shastra) of creative arts (shilpa) such as sculpture, iconography and painting. Closely related to Vastushastra (architecture), they often share the same literature.
