Niruttamarapu refers to “literary usage of dance” and represents the third book of the Pañcamarapu (‘five-fold traditional usage’), which is an important piece of Tamil literature.—Niruttam (dance, one of the sixty–four arts) is a common name for all kūttu and tāṇḍava (dance).

Niruttamarapu has the following five divisions:

  1. Niruttavakai Marapu,
  2. Tāṇḍava-Tāla Marapu,
  3. Akamārgaporul-Jathivaralāru Marapu,
  4. Akamargaporul-Taru Marapu,
  5. Kūttilakkaṇa Marapu.
