Source: Buddhist Door: Glossary‘Nirvāṇa without remainder’, an alternative designation for the nirvāṇa that is attained at death. Also known as ‘final’ nirvāṇa or parinirvāṇa. The remainder or residue referred to (upādhi) is the five aggregates (skandha) that consitute individuality, and which cease at the point when nirupādhiśeṣa-nirvāṇa is attained. For this reason the state is also known in Pāli sources as ‘the nirvāṇa of the aggregates’ (khandha-parinibbāna). One who attains this nirvāṇa is not reborn. This condition is accordingly to be distinguished from sopādhiśeṣa-nirvāṇa or ‘nirvāṇa with remainder’, where the embodied individual continues to exist.
