Nigrah (निग्रह्).—9 P

1) To keep or hold down, keep in check.

2) To curb, restrain, suppress, control; निगृह्य शोकम् (nigṛhya śokam) K.25; स्वकं तेजो निगृह्य (svakaṃ tejo nigṛhya) Pañcatantra (Bombay) 3.174; Bhagavadgītā (Bombay) 2.68; R.5.59; 14.85.

3) To stop, obstruct; निगृहीतो बलाद् द्वारि (nigṛhīto balād dvāri) Mb.

4) To punish, chastise; अधार्मिकं त्रिभिर्न्यायैर्निगृह्णीयात् प्रयत्नतः (adhārmikaṃ tribhirnyāyairnigṛhṇīyāt prayatnataḥ) Manusmṛti 8.31;9.38.

5) To seize, catch, apprehend, lay hold of; तमार्यगृह्यं निगृहीतधेनुः (tamāryagṛhyaṃ nigṛhītadhenuḥ) R.2.33.

6) To close or contract (as eyes); माथुरोऽक्षिणी निगृह्य (māthuro'kṣiṇī nigṛhya) Mṛcchakaṭika 2.

7) To subdue, conquer, overpower; प्रज्ञया निग्रहीतुं शक्यः (prajñayā nigrahītuṃ śakyaḥ) Mu.1; 1.28.

8) To draw in, restrain; निगृह्यन्तामभीशवः (nigṛhyantāmabhīśavaḥ) Ś.1.

Nigrah (निग्रह्):—[=ni-√grah] [Parasmaipada] [Ātmanepada] -gṛhṇāti, ṇīte ([dative case] [infinitive mood] -grabhe, [Ṛg-veda]), to hold down, lower, depress, [Ṛg-veda; Taittirīya-saṃhitā; Kātyāyana-śrauta-sūtra];

—to keep or hold back, draw near, attract, [Ṛg-veda; Atharva-veda; Śatapatha-brāhmaṇa] etc.;

—to seize, catch, hold, hold fast, stop, restrain, suppress, curb, tame, punish, [Manu-smṛti; Mahābhārata] etc.;

—to contract, close (as the eyes), [Mṛcchakaṭikā ii, 13/14] [Causal] -grāhayati, to cause to be apprehended or seized, [Daśakumāra-carita] :
