念處 [nian chu]—Foundations of Mindfulness — [Term] 'Nian' (念 [nian]) refers to the wisdom (智 [zhi]) that observes, and 'Chu' (處 [chu]) refers to the object (境 [jing]) that is observed. Therefore, the act of observing the object with wisdom is called the Foundations of Mindfulness. Sanskrit: Smṛtyupasthāna.
