內外 [nèi wài] [nei wai]—
1. Internal and external. From Guoyu (國語 [guo yu]), "Chu Yu Shang" (楚語上 [chu yu shang]): "As for beauty (美 [mei]), it means that all aspects, whether high or low (上下 [shang xia]), internal or external, big or small (小大 [xiao da]), far or near (遠近 [yuan jin]), are without harm; therefore, it is called beauty (美 [mei])."
2. Self-cultivation (修身 [xiu shen]) and conduct/actions (行事 [xing shi]). From Han Feizi (韓非子 [han fei zi]), "Jie Lao" (解老 [jie lao]): "What is called 'fang' (方 [fang]) is when the internal (內 [nei]) and external (外 [wai]) correspond (相應 [xiang ying]), and words (言 [yan]) and actions (行 [xing]) match (言行相稱 [yan xing xiang cheng])."
3. The traditional concept (觀念 [guan nian]) or rule (規矩 [gui ju]) of men handling external affairs (男主外 [nan zhu wai]) and women managing internal affairs (女主內 [nu zhu nei]). From The Scholars (儒林外史 [ru lin wai shi]), Chapter 29: "As a wife (太太 [tai tai]), I should only sit in the room (房裡 [fang li]), arranging dishes (裝圍碟 [zhuang wei die]), peeling fruits (剝果子 [bo guo zi]), and managing household affairs (當家料理 [dang jia liao li]) for you. How could I sit in the hall (廳上 [ting shang])? That would make people say your family has no proper order (沒 [mei])."
4. Around; approximately (表示概數 [biao shi gai shu]). Similar to "上下 [shang xia]" (up and down) or "左右 [zuo you]" (left and right). From Stories to Caution the World (醒世恆言 [xing shi heng yan]), Volume 38, "Li Daoren's Solo Journey to Yunmen" (李道人獨步雲門 [li dao ren du bu yun men]): "Only five kinds of fragrance (五樣香氣 [wu yang xiang qi]) were smelled, filling all of Qingzhou (青州 [qing zhou]), approximately within a radius of three hundred li (三百里 [san bai li]), none did not reach the nose (無不觸鼻 [wu bu chu bi])."
