內護摩 [nei hu mo]—Internal Homa — [Ritual Practice (修法 [xiu fa])] The Homa (護摩 [hu mo]) ritual performed in Esoteric Buddhism (密教 [mi jiao]) has two methods, internal and external (內外二法 [nei wai er fa]). For instance, in the Six Types of Homa Rituals (六種護摩法 [liu zhong hu mo fa]), the one that uses a fire altar (火壇 [huo tan]), milk wood (乳木 [ru mu]), and other items to burn fire is called External Homa (外護摩 [wai hu mo]). This is because it is considered an external method to the mind (心外之法 [xin wai zhi fa]). On the other hand, the one that does not involve a fire altar, but rather solely dwells on the mind moon disc (心月輪 [xin yue lun]) to burn away the inner afflictions (煩惱 [fan nao]), is called Internal Homa. It is also called Principle Homa (理護摩 [li hu mo]).
