Navayānasaṃprasthita (नवयानसंप्रस्थित).—(nava-yāna-saṃprasthita), adj. (also acira-yāna°, q.v.), newly entered upon the Vehicle, (a Bodhisattva) that is in the early stages of the (mahā-)yāna: Saddharmapuṇḍarīka 32.5; 218.5; yaḥ kaścid…bodhisattvo 'sya dharmaparyāya- syottraset saṃtraset…navayānasaṃprasthitaḥ sa… bodhisattvo mahāsattvo veditavyaḥ. sacet punaḥ śrāvaka- yānīyo 'sya (etc., as before) adhimānikaḥ sa…śrāvaka- yānikaḥ pudgalo veditavyaḥ Saddharmapuṇḍarīka 233.13 ff. This last passage is decisive. Kern correctly renders the 2d and 3d passages but mistranslates the first; Burnouf misunder- stands all three. Similarly Saddharmapuṇḍarīka 312.8; Śatasāhasrikā-prajñāpāramitā 910.11; Aṣṭasāhasrikā-prajñāpāramitā 139.12 et alibi.
Sanskrit, also spelled संस्कृतम् (saṃskṛtam), is an ancient language of India commonly seen as the grandmother of the Indo-European language family (even English!). Closely allied with Prakrit and Pali, Sanskrit is more exhaustive in both grammar and terms and has the most extensive collection of literature in the world, greatly surpassing its sister-languages Greek and Latin.
