Navasarga (नवसर्ग) refers to the “nine-fold creation”, according to the 10th century Saurapurāṇa: one of the various Upapurāṇas depicting Śaivism.—In the Mahābhārata (Śantiparva 298.16-25) there is a reference to nine-fold creation. Probably following the footsteps of the Mahābhārata the Purāṇas developed this idea of ‘navasarga’ and started giving accounts of creation on this line.
