Source: archive.org: Puranic EncyclopediaNavakanyakā (नवकन्यका).—An important item of Navarātripūjā (A festival of 9 days, as observed by Śakti worshippers) is the worship of virgins. The nine kinds of virgins (from two to ten years in age) thus worshipped are called Navakanyakās (nine virgins). (See undeṛ Kumārīpūjā).
The Purana (पुराण, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
