Nattampatti (or Nattampaṭṭi) is an historical important region.—Nattampaṭṭi seems to have been an important trading center during the pre- and early centuries of the Christian Era (CE). The Virudhunagar District Historical Research Center under the direction of the present author brought to light Roman gold coins in this village in May 1998 (Figs. 118-120). It was a chance find while digging the earth for laying a water pipeline [29]. These coins bear the portraits of Theodosius II (CE 402-50), Leo I (CE 457-74) and Zeno (476-91). The coins are pointers of the flourishing trade contact between the Shrivilliputtur region and the Roman Empire in the 5th century CE. This village is the venue of a Vishnu temple that accommodates a rock-cut image of the Lord in a boulder of the early Pandya period.
