The Gupta empire (r. 3rd-century CE), founded by Śrī Gupta, covered much of ancient India and embraced the Dharmic religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. Nāgiraṭṭamaṇḍala formed a part of Dakṣiṇāṃśakavīthi in Puṇḍravardhana, the headquarters of the province of the same name. Mūla-Nāgiraṭṭa seems to have formed the headquarters of the Nāgiraṭṭamaṇḍala. Nāgiraṭṭa is a Prakritic form of Nāgarāṣṭra
