Muvaraivenran (or Mūvaraiveṉṟāṉ) is an historical important region.—It lies 15 kms away from Shrivilliputtur on the Maturai road. Durig the time of the palayakkarans it was the fief of the Nattampaṭṭi zamindar, Vira Muttu Tevar. During the early medieval period it was the venue of a rock-cut temple for Malaikkoluinticuvarar. Recently structural additons have been made with a separate temple for Devi Marakatavalli on the rock to the left of the temple. To the right of the rock, adjoining the mandapa of the rock-cut cave a structural addition is being inserted to house an image of Dakshinamurti.
