Mutal (முதல்) noun [K. mudal.]

1. Beginning; ஆதி. முதலூழியிறுதிக்கண் [athi. muthaluzhiyiruthikkan] (சிலப்பதிகாரம் அரும்பதவுரை [silappathigaram arumbathavurai] 8, 1, உரை. [urai.])

2. First, as in rank, place, etc.; இடம் முதலியவற்றில் முதலாயிருப்பது. முதல் நீடும்மே [idam muthaliyavarril muthalayiruppathu. muthal nidumme] (தொல். எழுத். [thol. ezhuth.] 458).

3. Cause; காரணம். நோய் முத னாடி [karanam. noy mutha nadi] (திருக்குறள் [thirukkural], 948).

4. God, as the First Cause; மூலக்காரணனான கடவுள். மூவாமுதலாய் நின்ற முதல்வா [mulakkarananana kadavul. muvamuthalay ninra muthalva] (திருவாசகம் [thiruvasagam] 27, 10).
