In English, the plant is called “Indian screw tree”. It is used throughout Ayurvedic literature such as the Caraka-saṃhitā and the Suśruta-saṃhitā. It is a large shrub (or small tree), growing up to 8 meters in height. It has a grey bark with hairy, ovate shaped leaves having red or orange-red colors. The fruits consist of compound pods and are twisted like a screw with a pointy end (hence its name). The raw fruits have a green color turing brown or grey when dried. The seeds are black-brown and have a rectangle or triangular shape.
The word Mṛgaśṛṅgī literally means “stag’s horn” and is composed of the words Mṛga (“deer”, “stag”) and Śṛṅgī (“horn”).
