摩耶夫人 [mó yé fū rén] [mo ye fu ren]—
The birth mother of Buddha Sakyamuni (佛陀釋迦牟尼 [fu tuo shi jia mou ni]). It is a combined transliteration and semantic translation of the Sanskrit term māyā-devī. Named Mahāmāyā (摩訶摩耶 [mo he mo ye]), she is traditionally believed to be the daughter of the elder Suprabuddha (善覺長者 [shan jue zhang zhe]) of the Sakya clan (釋迦族 [shi jia zu]) from Devadaha (天臂城 [tian bi cheng]). In Gu Kuang's (顧況 [gu kuang]) "Song of August Fifth" (八月五日歌 [ba yue wu ri ge]) from the Tang Dynasty (唐 [tang]), it says: "On April 8th (四月八日 [si yue ba ri]), a bright star (明星 [ming xing]) appeared, and Lady Māyā gave birth to the Buddha (降前佛 [jiang qian fu])." It is also translated as Mahāmāyā (摩訶摩邪 [mo he mo xie]).
