民墜塗炭 [mín zhuì tú tàn] [min zhui tu tan]—
The lives of the common people (百姓 [bai xing]) were extremely painful, as if they had fallen into mire and burning coals (泥濘火炭 [ni ning huo tan]). According to 'The Announcement of Zhonghui' (仲虺之誥 [zhong hui zhi gao]) in The Classic of History (《書經 [shu jing]》): "The Xia Dynasty (有夏 [you xia]) was characterized by corrupt rule (昏德 [hun de]), and the people (民 [min]) were plunged into utter misery (墜塗炭 [zhui tu tan])." (The idiom 塗炭 [tu tan] literally means "mire and charcoal," signifying extreme suffering). It is also known as '生靈塗炭 [sheng ling tu tan]' (shēnglíng tútàn).
民墜塗炭:百姓生活十分痛苦,如墜入泥濘火炭之中。《書經.仲虺之誥》:「有夏昏德,民墜塗炭。」也作「生靈塗炭」。
