秘密教 [mi mi jiao]—Secret Teaching — [Term] One of the Fourfold Teachings of Transformative Method (化仪四教 [hua yi si jiao]) established by Tiantai (天台 [tian tai]). See the entry for Fourfold Teachings (四教 [si jiao]). (Fourfold Teachings) is the general name for the Shingon (真言宗 [zhen yan zong]) school. See the entry for Secret Treasury (秘密藏 [mi mi cang]). (Secret Treasury) is another name for the Perfect Teaching (圆教 [yuan jiao]). Because the Perfect Teaching is profoundly deep, it cannot be seen or heard by the two vehicles (二乘 [er cheng]). The first volume of the Treatise on the Five Teachings (五教章 [wu jiao zhang]) states: "The fourth is named Perfect Teaching, referring to the Dharma Realm's (法界 [fa jie]) self-mastery, fully endowed with all inexhaustible Dharma gates (法门 [fa men]), where one is all, and all is one, etc., and the Avatamsaka (华严 [hua yan]) is an example. It is also called Secret Teaching, because Sravakas (声闻 [sheng wen]) and others cannot see or hear it."
