孟姜女 [mèng jiāng nǚ] [meng jiang nu]—
A figure in Chinese folk tales (中國民間故事 [zhong guo min jian gu shi]). Legend has it that during the time of Qin Shi Huang (秦始皇 [qin shi huang]), her husband, Qiliang (杞良 [qi liang]), was forced to build the Great Wall (長城 [zhang cheng]) and did not return for many years. She then traveled thousands of miles to find him. Upon reaching the Great Wall, she heard that her husband had died. She cried bitterly at the foot of the wall, and the Great Wall consequently collapsed. This is a widely circulated folk tale, possibly evolved from the event of Qiliang's wife (杞良妻 [qi liang qi]) crying and causing a city wall to collapse (哭夫崩城 [ku fu beng cheng]) during the Spring and Autumn period (春秋時代 [chun qiu shi dai]).
