Melaprakaraṇa (मेलप्रकरण) is the name of a chapter of the Svaramelakalānidhi which is contained in the “bharataśāstram” manuscript of the Tālalakṣaṇa, one of the works ascribed to Kohala—a celebrated authority of the ancient period along with others such as Bharata, Yāṣṭika, Śārdūla, Kāśyapa etc.—Bharataśāstram R 20175/ SR 8893 is a palm leaf manuscript found in the GOML, Chennai. This manuscript contains all the chapters of Svaramelakalānidhi [e.g., melaprakaraṇa] between folios 47(?) and 61. Almost the entire text is available in order though a little portion of Tālalakṣaṇam is found in between.
Gitashastra (गीतशास्त्र, gītaśāstra) refers to the ancient Indian science of Music (gita or samgita), which is traditionally divided in Vocal music, Instrumental music and Dance (under the jurisdiction of music).
