眉目 [méi mù] [mei mu]—
1. Eyebrows and eyes (眉毛和眼睛 [mei mao he yan jing]). Generally refers to one's appearance (容貌 [rong mao]). From Records of the Three Kingdoms (三國志 [san guo zhi]), Volume 12, Book of Wei (魏書 [wei shu]), Biography of Cui Yan (崔琰傳 [cui yan chuan]): "Cui Yan (崔琰 [cui yan])'s voice and demeanor (聲姿高暢 [sheng zi gao chang]) were lofty and clear, his eyebrows and eyes were open and bright (疏朗 [shu lang]). His beard was four feet long (鬚長四尺 [xu zhang si chi]), giving him great gravitas and prestige (威重 [wei zhong]); court officials (朝士 [chao shi]) looked upon him with awe (膽望 [dan wang]), and even Emperor Taizu (太祖 [tai zu]) (Cao Cao) respected and feared (敬憚 [jing dan]) him."
2. A metaphor for "face" (面子 [mian zi]) (reputation/prestige). From Water Margin (水滸傳 [shui hu chuan]), Chapter 70: "Specifically arranged for Wu Yong (吳學究 [wu xue jiu]) and Gongsun Sheng (公孫勝 [gong sun sheng]) to assist him, hoping he would succeed in battle so that the stronghold (山寨 [shan zhai]) would gain some prestige; who would have thought he'd meet another formidable opponent (敵手 [di shou])."
