Natyashastra (theatrics and dramaturgy)
Mattalam refers to “drums”, as defined in Cilappatikāram: an ancient epic authored by Ilango Adigal representing an important piece of Tamil literature.—In the orchestra, flute was followed by yal (stringed musical instrument); yal was followed by mattalam (drums); mattalam was followed by kuṭamula (a kind of wind instrument). Mula was followed by āmantirikai (kind of drum). The above mentioned instruments blended with each other.
Natyashastra (नाट्यशास्त्र, nāṭyaśāstra) refers to both the ancient Indian tradition (shastra) of performing arts, (natya—theatrics, drama, dance, music), as well as the name of a Sanskrit work dealing with these subjects. It also teaches the rules for composing Dramatic plays (nataka), construction and performance of Theater, and Poetic works (kavya).

Mattalam refers to: “A percussion instrument, drum or tabor”.—It is included in the glossary section of the study dealing with the Temples and Cult of Shri Rama in Tamil-Nadu, with reference to the traditional lore, embodied in, for example the Nalayirativvaiyappirapantam (i.e., Nalayira Divyaprabandham).
